5th Annual Traveling Decoy! Louie the Long-tail

August 28, 2013

2013_2014 Traveling Decoy

Well folks, it is that time of year again, for the 5th Annual Lake Effect Chapter of the Michigan Duck Hunters Association Traveling Decoy! So you are asking yourself, “What is the traveling decoy”? The traveling decoy started for the Lake Effect group in the fall of 2009 as a way to have fun and show hunters from around the State enjoying the sport of waterfowling, both in our State and while on trips out of State. It was such a huge hit, that we decided to do it again, and again, and now for the 5th year AGAIN!
Every season, hunters from around Michigan and some from even out of State sign up to be included on the traveling decoy’s hunt calendar and we try and get the decoy into as many hands as possible throughout the season. Hunter’s take photographs, fill out a journal/logbook, and then send it onto the next person to have fun. To date, the first four traveling decoys have logged somewhere in the vicinity of 35,000 miles of travel combined, with roughly 800 birds harvested over them!! With this year’s decoy, we easily will surpass the 40,000 mile mark for the decoy’s travels and hopefully will surpass the 1,000 bird mark as well for harvest numbers! The decoy will make its rounds all season long and will return to West Michigan around February 1st, so that photographs can be compiled and made into a hard cover book, which then in turn will be auctioned off with the traveling decoy on Thursday February 27th, 2014 at the Lake Effect Chapter of MDHA Annual Event! In year’s past we have had a few Chapter members who have taken the traveling decoy on non-hunting trips, but it has been far and few between. Have a favorite fall fishing outing? A trip to bow camp? Small Game Hunting? It doesn’t have to necessarily be a waterfowl outing, be creative with it, and HAVE FUN!

Well, enough rambling, this year’s traveling decoy is Louie the Long-tail, carved by Grand Haven native and longtime Chapter supporter Marty Yonker. We are very excited to get this rolling and the images included are very self-explanatory as to how to sign up! We used to just limit this to Michigan Sportsman forum members and our Chapter members, but we are going to try a new format this year. Please see the RULES document that gives a full explanation on the process!

Let’s make this the best season yet for the 5th Annual Traveling Decoy, Louie the Longtail!

2013 Lake Effect Chapter of MDHA Shrimp Boil/Perch Dinner AYCE–NEW LOCATION!!!

August 20, 2013

SHRIMP BOIL FLYER 2013

Hey Everyone,

We wanted to start spreading the word that we have an ALL new format for our shrimp boil this year or actually should we say, “THE SHRIMP AND PERCH DINNER!”

This is the 2nd year that we are holding this gathering and we are going to move it to an ALL NEW location with an ALL NEW format.

Thursday September 19th
Holiday Inn-Muskegon
939 3rd St Muskegon, MI 49440

Last year wasn’t up to the full Lake Effect potential for where we held it and we decided to hold it at a new venue. This year we will be featuring not only ALL YOU CAN EAT Shrimp, but we will also be featuring ALL YOU CAN EAT Perch as well! We have attended other organization’s events at the Holiday Inn and the food came out lightning fast and was of VERY high quality! We are really looking forward to the new venue change.

Thursday September 19th
Cash Bar Starts at 5:30PM
Dinner Starts at 7pm

The Cost is $30 per person

We will be featuring some various raffles and other activities all throughout the evening and it should be something fun to get everyone together for a little PRE duck season socializing and to meet some fellow outdoors men and women in the West Michigan Area!

RSVP to:

Also, while we are sending out this email, we are sad to inform everyone that this year we will not be holding our Youth Day. Everyone in our 100% volunteer group are busy with one thing or the other and this year we ran into a few bumps along the way with planning that has resulted in us deciding that instead of putting on a sub-par event for our attendees, that we would re-group and hold a bigger and better event in 2014. We started the youth day in 2008 at the Muskegon State Park (Snug Harbor) and held it there in 09, 10 and 11. 2012 brought a brand new venue, the DNR office of the Muskegon State Game Area and with sports, vacations, new little ones, work logistical/scheduling conflicts, and a few other factors, we have decided to make the call to regroup and take a break from the 2013 event to make the 2014 event THE BEST ONE YET! Stay Tuned to our website, Facebook, and Email for updates on other future and upcoming events throughout this fall, winter and next spring!

Thank you for everyone’s support!

Meeting Reminder and Volunteer Opportunity!

March 28, 2013

Meeting Reminder

Our first “post banquet” meeting will be held next Wednesday, April 3rd, at 7pm.  We will be meeting at the usual location of Sam’s Joint in Norton Shores.  Come as you are, arrive early if you’d like!  We will be meeting in the “back corner” of the restaurant.  The formal meeting should last about an hour with additional time to socialize and discuss topics.  Topics to be discussed will be planning for upcoming Spring/Summer activities and projects, brainstorming for future events, and much more!  One volunteer opportunity that is coming very soon is the Grand River Greenup event! www.grandrivergreenup.com  This is the third year we are partaking in this very worthwhile event!  The event has a brand new location of Harbor Island in Grand Haven, MI.  The river cleanup will run from 9am-noon, with a free t shirt and food for the volunteers.  The last two years we have brought an army of volunteers in Camo with duckboats to hit the main areas of the river that can’t be accessed by foot and we have hauled literally TONS of trash and debris in.  This event sees roughly 400 people in attendance and is our way of giving back to the resource that we all enjoy so much and showing folks that we are more than just duck hunters, but conservationists who share the same love for the ecosystem that they do.  If you are interested in volunteering, either attend the monthly meeting next week or email lakeeffectmdha@gmail.com for registration instructions and a head count!

THANK YOU FROM THE LAKE EFFECT CHAPTER!!!

March 1, 2013

Well, another big event is in the books and we can’t thank everyone enough for coming out last night and supporting our event! Without your support, we would not be able to continue to grow and establish the Lake Effect Chapter as a driving force in the Michigan waterfowl world.

It was great to see so many familiar faces last night and of course many many new ones as well! Total head count was flirting right around 300 people last night and it really seemed like a good time was had by all.

Just a reminder, that if you are interested in becoming a part of our group, that we meet the first Wednesday of every month at the Norton Shore’s Sam’s Joint restaurant at 7pm. Our next meeting is Wednesday March 6th, 2013. Come as you are and join a great group of folks who are all striving to promote Michigan’s resources, raise awareness of habitat/wetland issues, assist in projects, and much much more! We believe strongly that we can make a difference in the Michigan hunting community, by recruiting new hunters, retaining current hunters, and by helping to increase social acceptance of hunting and trapping in our great State. We also feel that through education, outreach, and interaction, that we can help to build not only the Waterfowl community, but the hunting community in general. The more core members we can build, the more we can grow and in turn, the bigger the impact we are going to have here in Michigan and there are BIG BIG things to come from our Chapter.

Make sure and bookmark our website at http://www.lakeeffectmdha.org to stay up to date on current events for the Lake Effect Chapter.

Also, be sure to find us on facebook for weekly if not daily updates. Our facebook page can be found by clicking HERE

We also want to take a moment and thank DNR Wildlife Division Chief Russ Mason, as well as NRC Commissioner Annoesjka Steinman, for taking the time to attend our event, it means alot to us and we look forward to seeing you at more events in the future!

Please also take some time and view the attached donor sheet of all of our donors from the event!

Thank You Very much to each and every one of you and stay tuned for more Spring and summer events!
